Wolves and Dall Sheep: Denali's Key Predator Prey Tale Denali National Park & Preserve June 8 - 10, 2012 $297 Alaska Geographic Member Price $330 Non-Member Price
This course is not being offered in 2012.
Dall Sheep were the catalyst in the formation of Denali National Park in 1917, primarily to protect sheep and other game species from market hunting. Within twenty years, the sheep population had plummeted and accusing eyes turned to wolves. The National Park Service initiated Denali’s first predator prey study and since that time, wolves and sheep have played an important role in Denali’s science-based protection as an intact ecosystem. Join Alaskan Wildlife Biologist Ken Whitten for a close look at the intricate relationship between Denali’s wolves and sheep throughout the history of the park. From river bars to the high country, we’ll hike through wolf and sheep habitat learning about each species and the complex role they each play in shaping the other’s population, behavior, and habitat use.
