Alaska Geographic is a cooperating association, which allows us to work closely with public land agencies to further educational priorities. And unlike most organizations of our kind, Alaska Geographic not only supports more than one location, but also partners with multiple government agencies to spread our mission across the breadth of Alaska.
What is a Cooperating Association? After the National Park Service was created in 1916, several nonprofit organizations formed to support park programs and projects not covered by government funding. By 1936 cooperating associations were formally authorized by Congress enabling them to operate in national parks. Today cooperating associations work with all of America's national public land management agencies as well as many state agencies.
A cooperative association is best described as a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the education goals of the partner agency. Cooperating associations accomplish this through bookstore sales, membership support, book and publication development, research funding, and other educational activities.
