Bears and Wilderness of Admiralty Island Tongass National Forest June 7-13 $850

Study brown bear behavior and experience the concept of true wilderness in the heart of the Tongass National Forest in southeast Alaska. Join wilderness manager John Neary on foot and by kayak. In partnership with Discovery Southeast and Alaska Discovery. No kayaking experience necessary.
Space Available 10 spaces will be available when registration opens on January 6, 2009.
Accreditation
The University of Alaska Anchorage offers three professional development credits (level 500). The credit fee has been included in the course fee.
Times and Location Participants meet at the Alaska Discovery office in Juneau on the evening of June 7. Participants will travel to and from Admiralty Island by floatplane. The course ends on the afternoon of June 13.
Hiking Distances and Physical Fitness
Field Seminars are active learning experiences. Participants must be capable walkers, in good health, and equipped for sudden changes in weather. This course includes up to five miles of hiking and/or 1,500 foot elevation gain per day, over uneven terrain. This course also includes multiple days of kayaking activities in double kayaks. No kayaking experience is necessary.
Lodging and Meals Accommodations are not included for the evening of June 7, but are provided the nights of June 8-12. Accommodations are in a rustic backcountry campsite, and participants will share tents. Meals are prepared in the campsite and are simple, hearty, and family style.
