Chugach Coordinator

Alaska Geographic is seeking a dynamic individual to develop and coordinate a series of innovative programs designed to engage Alaskans in stewardship of the Chugach National Forest. This vibrant, multi-faceted campaign will include several key components, including experiential education, volunteerism, community outreach, and the dedication of the Chugach as a “children’s forest” for youth engagement and climate change monitoring. In order to develop and implement these programs, the Chugach Coordinator will work closely with all departments of Alaska Geographic as well as the Forest Service, the Anchorage School District, the University of Alaska, and other Alaskan and national partners.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and manage key programs of the children’s forest, including climate change monitoring sites, a youth-managed section of the forest, and a glacier girls program to reach underserved youth
- Communicate regularly with the Forest Service to continually refine partnership and program goals
- Facilitate and expand partnerships with the Anchorage School District, university researchers, Alaska Native Corporations, nonprofits, businesses, and other organizations
- Develop and coordinate volunteer projects for children’s forest and related stewardship efforts
- Assist in fundraising from foundations, local businesses/donors, and earned revenue
- Draft marketing and outreach materials such as press releases, brochures, and e-communications
- Coordinate all Chugach-related projects internally and externally for message cohesion
Desired Qualifications
- Proven ability to initiate, implement, and evaluate innovative community-based conservation, formal or informal education programs, and/or volunteer initiatives
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and efficiently complete multiple tasks while attending to detail and working with a high degree of accuracy
- Ability to work both independently and as a team, and to coordinate the efforts of a variety of partners
- Exceptional writing and communication skills
- Degree in environmental science, education, or related fields
Location and Opportunity
Excellent opportunity for a creative self-starter with experience in environmental education, community organizing, and/or fundraising. The successful candidate will be able to envision and implement new programs, manage multiple priorities, produce professional materials, and converse easily in person or by telephone with partners and funders. The position is full time, based in Anchorage. Occasional travel required. Salary DOE.
