Born in Kennecott Memories of a Kennecott Kid Sissy Lommel Kluh
Born in Kennecott tells the story in text and photographs of a child's life in a company owned mining town nestled in the mountainous interior of Alaska. Kennecott was abandoned in 1938. Currently, the town is being restored. The mines have been designated a National Historic Landmark and the area is surrounded by the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.
The author lived and played in Kennecott from 1920-1927 with her father, mother, and two sisters. Her anecdotes and recounted memories bring a distinct and vivid focus to what we would now think of as hardships; the isolation of a small company town, outhouses hanging over the glacier's edge, and playing outside at 30 degrees below zero. In her world these were not hardships, merely part of life's grand adventure!
