People Left Behind Early Peoples of the Kenai Coast Madelyn Yerden-Walker
The Chugach people to the east called them Unegkurmiut, or "the people out that way." Small in number, these people tread lightly on the land and waters, taking only what they needed to survive. Leaving no written records, we have only begun to unravel their story through artifacts discovered and archeological sites unearthed along the Kenai Fjords coast.
Drawing upon her first-hand experiences with other Native peoples, the author is able to offer readers not only fascinating historical information but also a unique way to think about the Unegkurmiut and challenges the reader to step back in time and see things through the eyes of the ancestral people of the area.
Madelyn Yerden-Walker's interest in archeology and anthropology began in college when she was a "token biologist" on archeological surveys in the Idaho desert. This interest continued with her fieldwork among the Zapotec Indians of Mexico, and her move to Alaska. She holds a BS in biology and a masters in education.
