Russian Bishop's House

Legacy of an Empire

National Park Service

Price: $2.95
Member price: $2.51

Imperial Russia was the dominant power in the North Pacific for over a hundred years and Sitka was its colonial capital. The Russian Bishop's House was completed in 1842 and served as the center of the Russian Orthodox Church for over 125 years, in a diocese that stretched from California to Siberian Kamchatka. The National Park Service obtained the property in 1973 and took on a 16-year restoration project.

Today, the restored structure offers visitors a chance to walk through the Russian-American period and experience what life was like under the tsar. Detailed floor plans, notes on the restoration project, even a sample menu are all included in this reference to the history and mission of the Russian Bishop's House.
